1.
If thou wilt come and dwell with me at home My sheep-cote shall be strewed with new green rushes; Nay, more than this, I have a garden plot Wherein there wants nor herbs, nor roots, nor bushes, Sweet-smelling beds of lilies and of roses, Which rosemary banks and lavender encloses All these and more I’ll give thee for thy love If these, and more, may tice hy love away.
2.
Man’s life is well compared to a feast Furnished with hoice of all variety. To it comes Time, and as a bidden guest He sets him down in pomp and majesty. The three-fold age of man the waiters be. Then with an earthen voider, made of clay, Comes death and takes the table clean away.
3.
Sighing and sadly sitting by my love, She asked the cause of my hearts sorrowing, Conjuring me by heaven’s eternal king To tell the cause which me so much did move. ‘Compelled’, quoth I, ‘to thee will I confess. Love is the cause, and only love it is That doth deprive me of my heavenly bliss. Love is the pain tha doth my heart oppress.’ ‘And what is she,’ quoth she, ‘whom thou do’st love?’ ‘Look in this glass’, quoth I. ‘There shall thou see The perfect form of my felicity.’ When, thinking that it would strange magic prove, She opened it, and taking off the cover She straight perceived herself to be my lover.
4.
If music and sweet poetry agree, As they must needs (the sister and the brother) Then must the love be great ‘twixt thee and me Because ou lov’st the one and I the other. Downland to thee is dear, whose heavenly touch Upon the lute doth ravish human sense; Spenser to me, whose deep conceit is such As, passing all conceit, needs no defence. Thou lov’st to hear the sweet melodious sound That Phoebus’ lute, the queen of music makes, And I in deep delight am chiefly drowned When as himself to singing he betakes. One god is god of both (as poets fain) So we love both and both inus remain.
